Understanding the Belly Press Test (or Abdominal Compression Test) Assessment

To assess the function and strength of the **subscapularis muscle**, especially in cases where the Lift-Off test is restricted.

Watch How It's Done

How do I start?

Patient is sitting or standing. The affected hand is placed on the abdomen (belly).

What happens?

The patient is instructed to push into their belly, trying to **keep the elbow forward**. The examiner monitors the pressure and the patient's elbow position.

In Plain English

What Does a Positive Result Mean?

The patient's **elbow moves posteriorly** (backward) or they cannot maintain pressure, suggesting a subscapularis tear.

Helpful Tip:

If the elbow drops back (posteriorly), it indicates the patient is using the wrist extensors and chest muscles instead of the subscapularis.
