To test the integrity and strength of the **supraspinatus muscle and tendon** while placing less tension on the tendon than the Empty Can position.

Watch How It's Done

How do I start?

Patient is sitting or standing. Arm is abducted to 90° in the **scapular plane** (30° of horizontal adduction) and held in **external rotation** (thumbs pointing up).

What happens?

The examiner applies downward pressure on the patient's forearm or wrist, and the patient is instructed to resist this pressure.

In Plain English

What Does a Positive Result Mean?

The reproduction of pain or notable weakness during resistance compared to the unaffected side.

Helpful Tip:

Research suggests the Full Can position may isolate the supraspinatus better and is less provocative of general impingement pain than the Empty Can test.
