Understanding the Kim test Assessment

To detect a **posteroinferior labral lesion** (tear) of the shoulder.

Watch How It's Done

How do I start?

Patient is sitting. Shoulder is abducted to 90°. Examiner stabilizes the lateral aspect of the shoulder.

What happens?

The examiner applies an **axial load** to the humerus and performs a combination of **45° diagonal elevation and internal rotation** of the arm.

In Plain English

What Does a Positive Result Mean?

A sudden onset of **posterior shoulder pain and a posterior click or clunk** with or without a sensation of the shoulder giving way.

Helpful Tip:

The Kim test is considered more sensitive than the Jerk Test for detecting the predominantly **inferior** component of a posteroinferior labral lesion.
