Understanding the Rent Test Assessment

To test for the presence of rotator cuff tears. The rent test is used in addition to other rotator cuff tear tests (Jobe test, Drop arm sign, Belly-press test, List-off test, Bear-hug test) to determine the location of the tear

Watch How It's Done

How do I start?

Patient is sitting. The patient's shoulder is passively extended and positioned in a relaxed, internally rotated position.

What happens?

The examiner uses the thumb of the opposite hand to firmly palpate the area just anterior to the acromion, directly over the supraspinatus tendon insertion. The examiner then externally rotates the patient's arm slightly and repeats palpation.

In Plain English

What Does a Positive Result Mean?

A palpable **hole or gap (rent)** in the tendon upon deep palpation, indicating a full-thickness tear.

Helpful Tip:

Due to overlying structures, this test is often challenging to perform accurately but is highly suggestive of a tear when positive.
