Understanding the Yocum's Test Assessment

To assess for **subacromial impingement syndrome (SAIS)**.

Watch How It's Done

How do I start?

Patient is sitting or standing. The hand of the affected side is placed on the **unaffected shoulder**.

What happens?

The patient is instructed to **lift the elbow** off the chest/rib cage against the resistance of the examiner's hand on the elbow.

In Plain English

What Does a Positive Result Mean?

Reproduction of **shoulder pain** during the active resisted elevation of the elbow.

Helpful Tip:

Similar in principle to the Neer and Hawkins-Kennedy tests, it loads the subacromial structures in an internally rotated position.
